The newly announced Sony FE 300mm f/2.8 GM OSS is the lightest 300mm ever made.
It’s half the price and weight of the 400mm f/2.8 and way better than anything out right now from competition. You won’t be able to get your hands on one until spring though.
Sony FE 300mm f/2.8 GM OSS Key Features:
- 1470g (3.24 lb)
- 12.4 x 26.4cm (4.88 x 10.4″) dimensions
- 40.5mm filter size (drop-in)
- 11 diaphragm blades
Paired with a 1.4x or 2x converter, the 300mm looks like an exciting lightweight option to replace the much bigger 400/600mm, but that depends on your style.
It was announced together with the Sony a9 III for the same price, so getting both of these will set you back a whopping $12,000.
One of the reasons why it feels good in hands is because the majority of heavier elements were moved closer to the camera.
As expected, the auto focus performance is superb and the lens is weather-sealed (dust, moisture, dirt, you name it).
Release Date & Price
The Sony 300mm f/2.8 GM OSS will be available in the spring of 2024 for $5,999.
Mark Galer’s video above shows you the performance of this lens with both converters and it’s amazing how sharp it manages to stay with both.
